Serena Williams lost her Rogers cup final against Bianca Andreescu due to a back injury.

Serena Williams handed the Rogers cup to Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu in Toronto after she picked up a back injury in the final, that led to her retirement.

The 37-year-old American left in tears after suffering a back spasm as 19-year-old Andreescu consoled her courtside.

Williams broke down at 1-3 in the first set when she withdrew.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams said: “I’m sorry I couldn’t do it today, I tried, “It’s been a tough year, but we’ll keep going.”

Andreescu, 19, who won her first WTA title in Indian earlier this year, became the first Canadian woman to win the Rogers Cup women’s singles cup since 1969.

The current Rogers cup holder Bianca Andreescu said Serena made her cry because she knows how it feels to pull out of a tournament final, it’s really hard.

She added: “This is a dream come through, but this not the way I wanted to win“, ” You are absolutely a champion. I’ve watched you triumph so many times, you are truly a champion on and off the court.”

Williams was seeking for her first title since returning to the competition in 2018 after her childbirth.

Serena Williams will be anticipating in winning her 24th Grand Slam title, that will starts on 26th of August.

Serena reached the Wimbledon final last month but ended up losing it to Simona Halep, she had suffered a knee injury earlier this year.
