Real Madrid started their new season with a victory over Celta Vigo 3-1 at Balaidos, in turn quietening the controversy which has surrounded the club.

The result was also a confidence boost, as it secured Real Madrid are above their opponents Barcelona in LaLiga Santander for the first time in 818 days.

The last time Real Madrid were above Barcelona was in 2016/2017 season when they won the Laliga Santander.

Since then, the Los Blancos have only suited Barcelona‘s points tally during a LaLiga Santander season but have never edged in the front role.

Madrid finished third last season with 19 points behind the Catalan team at one stage, the longest gap between the two teams in history.

Their victory against Celta Vigo was also essential as it is the first time since the LaLiga Santander 2007/08 season that the team had stayed above Barcelona after the first matchday. That year, Los Blancos went on to win the Laliga title.

Real Madrid next fixture will be at home against Real Valladolid, while Barcelona host Real Betis in the Camp Nou.
