Barcelona unveiled a statue of their legendary ex-player and coach Johan Cruyff outside the Camp Nou in a tribute to the late Dutch international earlier today.
The dutchman died of lung cancer in 2016 at the age of 68.
The former Netherlands player was signified as an icon during his playing times before his innovative coaching techniques that transformed the game. He was very good at two roles of playing: either as a supporting striker or the central striker, he acquired three Ballons d’Or during his football career and spent five seasons with La Blaugrana, while he also enjoyed a sum of 11 years at Ajax spread across two stints.
After he hung his boots, Cruyff rejoins Barcelona as a coach and managed de Godenzonen, during his managerial career he won the 1992 European Cup adding to the treble of the continental cup he accumulated as Ajax’s chief playmaker.
Peoples gave credit to Cruyff amidst the development of the club’s history and many of his pupils, such as Pep Guardiola, have progressed on to become prosperous coaches themselves.
President Josep Maria Bartomeu, vice-presidents Jordi Moix and Jordi Cardoner and treasurer Enrique Tombas were all present at the commemoration.
Bartomeu said: “It’s a unique and very emotional moment, It has been three years after his demise on March 24, 2016, We proceed on without the man who changed our collective reasoning.
He added saying: “Cruyff revived our self-esteem and taught us that if we strived without lamenting, we can obtain anything we desired. The statues of Cruyff and [Laszlo] Kubala, these two legends of Barcelona will prevail in such a symbolic place.
Johan‘s wife Danny and children Susila and Jordi also attended the commemoration.
His son Jordi said (as quoted by Barcelona’s official Twitter account): “It produces satisfaction, excellent and pride to the entire family. We would like to appreciate everyone who made it possible. It is in a very unique position for [my father], where he spent a lot of his time as a player and the team coach.
Cruyff brought a way of operating the game whereby all players are competent of filling in for each other and apprehending their teammate’s positions in the side. The method brought huge breakthrough to Ajax in the 1970s, still serves as just one of the several ways in which he influences football and helped form its future.
The bronze statue is 3.5 metres in length, scales 1,500 kilograms and took Dutch sculptor Corry Ammerlaan van Niekerk four months to mount.
It can be seen in front of the entrance to the Tribuna stand, adjacent to the statue of Kubala.
Cruyff scored 33 goals in 48 caps for the Netherlands national team. He made his debutant against Hungary on September 7, 1966, aged 19 years and 135 days.
As a footballer, he played from 1992 through to 2010, including periods with Barcelona and Manchester United. He earned nine caps for the Netherlands national football team, playing at UEFA Euro 1996, and he won the Premier League title in 1997 while at United.
Cruyff led the Netherlands to the final of the 1974 FIFA World Cup and received the Golden Ball as the player of the tournament. … At club level, Cruyff started his career at Ajax, where he won eight Eredivisie titles, three European Cups and one Intercontinental Cup.
