Keylor Navas has completed a permanent move to Paris Saint-Germain while Alphonse Areola joined Real Madrid on loan.
There were rumours surrounding the transfer deal in couples of weeks ago, however, the two teams had officially confirmed that they’ve both reached an agreement for the transfer.
Real Madrid took to their official website to release a confirmation statement that read: “Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Keylor Navas. The club would like to show their appreciation and love for his behaviour and his delivery in the five seasons he has appeared in the Real Madrid shirt.”
While PSG tweeted: “Areola joins Real Madrid until 30th June 2020. The 26-year-old shot-stopper, capped three times for France, is under contract with Paris Saint-Germain until 2023. The loan deal with Real Madrid does not include a purchase option.”
PSG recently signed two goalkeeper Marcin Bulka on a free agent transfer earlier this summer and also signed Sergio Rico on loan from Sevilla, the Sevilla man spent last season on loan at Fulham, the Ligue 1 champions want to improve their goalkeeping selection following the departure of Gianluigi Buffon who returns to his former club Juventus on a free transfer earlier.
Navas signed for Real Madrid in 2014 following his Levante departure, he was a back-up to the club legendary goalkeeper Iker Casillas but has transpired as one of the most successful goalkeepers of his generation after Casillas left the club for Porto in 2015.
The 38-year-old spent 15 years in the Real Madrid first team. The goalkeeper made his debut on 12 September 1999 against Athletic.
He holds five records of IFFHS Goalkeeper of the Year Award victories, the Spaniard announced his retirement in May this year after suffering illness in training with his Porto teammates.
During Navas period in the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, he made 162 appearances for Madrid and won three UEFA Champions League for the Los Blancos they won the competition three times back to back to set the competition record. He established himself during Zinedine Zidane first managerial experienced, he was also in excellent form when Madrid achieved the La Liga title in the 2016-17 season.
Navas playing time became limited following the arrival of the Belgian Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea in the summer of 2018 who instantly converted the club number one goalkeeper spot, the 32-year-old Costa Rica international made only 10 La Liga start despite Courtois struggling to establish himself in the campaign.
The Real Madrid boss Zidane had earlier relied on Navas and said before this transfer that he didn’t want the keeper to depart the Bernabéu.
Areola has been PSG’s first choice ‘keeper for the last two seasons but had struggled for first-team football last season following the arrival of Gianluigi Buffon from the Seria A champions Juventus.
The France international arrives in Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain on a year-long loan and underwent his medical last weekend, he’s said to be Thibaut Courtois deputy.
It was understood that Real Madrid are satisfied that at least they were capable to obtain a good replacement for Navas.
The 26-year-old has received respect as one of Ligue 1’s most reliable keepers.
The pressure will rest on Courtois to enhance his performances of last season, his displays were requiring persistence and prestige. While Zidane no longer has Navas to produce high-class contest and cover, Areola is fair enough to keep the Belgian on his toes.
Areola is presently on his international duty with France and will start training with his new club after the international break.
Both players will have to abide till when the club competition returns after the international break in order to make their debuts for their new club, with PSG hosting Strasbourg on September 14 at the Parc des Princes and Real Madrid to host Levante at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on the same day.
